The Cailleach

Large scale puppet commissioned for the Wood Sisters Winter Storytelling Festival 2014 in Dartington, Devon. The ‘Cailleach’ is a figure from Celtic mythology, also known as the ‘hag’ or ‘crone’ and symbolising death as part of the cycles of nature. In Celtic mythology the Cailleach has a mid-winter battle with Brighid, the goddess of light and new life, who eventually wins to bring about the arrival of spring. Puppet head made from modroc and papier mache (moulded around a log and a pumpkin sculpted with newspaper!), with a willow structure torsoDSCF0238DSCF0142DSCF0146DSCF0231.
